Veterinary Neurology and Neurosurgery

At Dogwood Vets, we have a highly skilled veterinary neurology and neurosurgery team led by Donald Sheahan, who is accredited as a BSc BVSc FHEA Cert SAS dipECVS European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery. Also on his team are Eleanor Pass and Lucy Ferguson, who are both committed to giving every patient the quality of care they need.

Veterinary neurology and neurosurgery involves the study and the treatment of diseases of the nervous system, the part of the body that includes the brain, the spinal column, nerves, and muscles. As a discipline, neurology requires in-depth knowledge of both medicine and surgery.

Many of our specialists have undergone extensive further training in order to ensure that they’re qualified to undertake every case they see. With our expert multidisciplinary team and our cutting edge facilities, we are able to treat such conditions as:

  • Epilepsy
  • Intervertebral and cervical disc disease
  • Disc extrusions or protrusions
  • Facial paralysis
  • Myositis
  • Strokes
  • Wobbler syndrome
  • Dorsal laminectomies at L7/S1
  • Hemilaminectomies for disc extrusions / protrusions
  • Ventral slots for cervical disc disease

Whilst we are able to treat a number of conditions on a routine basis, some cases require us to implement a more bespoke intervention.

Veterinary Neurology and Neurosurgery – What to Expect

Every soft tissue surgery procedure starts with a consultation process. We’ll spend 20 to 60 minutes discussing your pet’s medical history whilst performing all necessary examinations. Our veterinary neurology and neurosurgery specialist will then make clear recommendations as to how we should proceed, making you fully aware of all costs and risks, as well as the expected outcome.

If you’re happy for us to proceed, we will then book your pet in for surgery. If the case is urgent enough, we may undertake the surgery on the same day as the consultation. We will make sure that we take time to discuss and arrange the specific aftercare requirements for your pet.
